How to Keep Flowers Fresh in Summer: Flower Care Tips for Hong Kong
Summer can be a challenging season for keeping fresh flowers in good condition. High temperatures and humidity accelerate respiration and water loss, while also encouraging bacteria to grow in vase water. This can cause stems to deteriorate, petals to soften, and flowers to wilt sooner. Proper trimming, clean water, and a suitable environment are therefore especially important during the warmer months. With the right care, you can help your flowers stay fresh and beautiful for longer, even in hot weather.
1. Keep the Original Wrapping at First
There is no need to remove the wrapping immediately after receiving your bouquet. The original wrapping helps maintain the shape of the arrangement and provides support for the flowers. Keep the bouquet in a cool, well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, air-conditioning vents, and other sources of heat.
After a few days, or when the flowers need trimming and fresh water, you can remove the wrapping. Trim approximately 1–2 cm from the bottom of the stems at an angle, remove any leaves that would sit below the water line, and place the flowers in clean water to help the stems absorb water more effectively.
As water evaporates more quickly during hot weather, check the water level regularly and top up or replace the water as needed. Keeping the water fresh and clean can help extend the life of your flowers.
2. Keep the Vase and Water Clean
One of the most important aspects of caring for flowers in summer is keeping the water clean. Bacteria multiply more quickly in warm weather. If the water is left unchanged for several days, it may develop an unpleasant smell, while the stems may become slimy or begin to rot.
It is advisable to replace the water daily or every other day. When changing the water, rinse and clean the vase thoroughly to remove any residue or slime before refilling it with fresh water.
If you are using flower food, follow the recommended amount shown on the packaging. Avoid adding excessive sugar or other substances yourself, as too much sugar may encourage bacterial growth and shorten the life of the flowers.
3. Keep Leaves Out of the Water
When arranging your flowers, remove any leaves that would sit below the water line. Leaves left submerged in water can quickly decompose, affecting the water quality and encouraging bacterial growth.
If the bottom of the stems starts to discolour, soften, or become slimy, trim off a small section of the affected stems and replace the water with fresh, clean water.
This simple step is particularly important when caring for fresh flowers during the summer months.
4. Avoid Direct Sunlight and Hot Areas
Fresh-cut flowers do not require direct sunlight in the same way that many potted plants do.
Place your flowers in a cool, well-ventilated area with indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, hot windowsills, kitchens, areas beside electrical appliances, or other places where heat can build up.
Higher temperatures increase water loss and speed up the flowers’ natural ageing process. Flowers will generally last longer when kept in a cooler indoor environment.
5. Be Mindful of Air Conditioning and Temperature Changes
During summer in Hong Kong, outdoor temperatures can be very high while indoor spaces are often heavily air-conditioned. A comfortably cool indoor environment can help flowers last longer, but they should not be placed directly in front of an air-conditioning vent.
Constant strong airflow can cause petals and leaves to lose moisture quickly, resulting in dry edges and premature wilting.
Flowers should also avoid frequent movement between very hot and very cold environments. Sudden or repeated temperature changes can place additional stress on the flowers and may cause more delicate varieties to deteriorate sooner.
6. Keep Flowers Away from Ripening Fruit
Fresh flowers are best kept away from fruit, particularly ripening bananas, apples, pears, and similar fruits.
Certain fruits naturally release ethylene gas as they ripen. Ethylene is a natural plant hormone that can accelerate the ageing and wilting process of some flowers.
Although displaying flowers and fruit together may look attractive on a table, keeping them apart is recommended if you would like your flowers to last longer.
7. Remove Wilted Flowers Promptly
Different types of flowers naturally have different lifespans. Within the same bouquet, some varieties may begin to fade sooner, while chrysanthemums, carnations, foliage, and certain filler flowers may remain fresh for considerably longer.
If individual flowers become wilted, mouldy, or begin to deteriorate, remove them promptly rather than waiting for the entire bouquet to fade.
This not only keeps the arrangement looking neat but also helps prevent deteriorating flowers from affecting the remaining healthy flowers.
8. A Shorter Vase Life in Summer Is Natural
Even with proper care, fresh flowers generally have a shorter vase life in summer than during cooler months. This is influenced by temperature, humidity, transportation conditions, the variety of flowers, and how fully open the flowers are when received.
Different flower varieties also have naturally different lifespans, so the longevity of one type of flower should not be used as a direct comparison with another. For example, many chrysanthemums, carnations, and foliage varieties naturally last longer, while delicate flowers with thinner petals or flowers that are already fully open may have a shorter display life.
Fresh flowers are natural products with their own life cycles, and every stem will develop and age slightly differently.
9. Simple Summer Flower Care Habits
In summary, caring for fresh flowers during summer does not need to be complicated. The key is to keep the water clean, trim the stems when necessary, avoid excessive heat, and maintain a clean environment.
Check the water level and condition of your flowers regularly. Replace the water when necessary, trim the stems from time to time, remove any leaves below the water line and any flowers that have already wilted, and keep the arrangement in a cool indoor location.
Hot summer weather will naturally cause fresh flowers to age more quickly, but proper care can still help them remain at their best for longer. Rather than expecting every flower to last for exactly the same number of days, enjoy the different stages of your flowers—from opening and full bloom to their natural fading. This changing beauty is part of the unique charm of fresh flowers.
